Supercup 2023: Viaplay transmits camera signals using 5G
First-ever international broadcast based on mobile technology

During the 2023 Supercup at Munich’s Allianz Arena, DFL and media partner Viaplay tested 5G transmission of individual camera signals in an international setting for the first time. This gave the Viaplay field reporters added flexibility, enabling them to use many new camera positions and perspectives for their live interviews. As 5G applications make inroads in media production, this trial marked another important step ahead.

National and international customer base keeps growing

Sportec Solutions AG (STS) has seen a dynamic development since it began capturing and processing Bundesliga and Bundesliga 2 live match data in 2016. Today the services of STS are in demand on the international stage, as well. During the 2023-24 season, the DFL subsidiary’s portfolio lists more competitions than ever, for the first time including the Women’s Bundesliga and 3. Liga in Germany as well as the North American Major League Soccer.

When the first-ever Bundesliga goal was scored on 24 August 1963, the one lonely camera that was present in the stadium wasn’t operational yet. In the years since, not only the sport itself has evolved; its availability on media platforms for millions of football fans around the world has come a long way's, as well. Ball-level acoustics: Close-ball audio mixing
Smart mics deliver immersive sound experience

Football fans watching games on screen want to feel as close to the action on the pitch as possible. This not only applies to the image captured by the cameras but also to the sound heard at the stadium. The sound track for the video draws on many microphones arranged around the pitch and is controlled automatically using live position data.

VBL sees highest number of participating clubs since inception
In November, and in the inaugural year of EA SPORTS FC™ Pro, the Virtual Bundesliga (VBL) competitions will start into their sixth season, with a total of 35 clubs taking part in the VBL Club Championship this time.
