Dear Reader,
It was two days filled with inspiration and innovation: On 20 and 21 March, over 2,000 guests gathered at the MERKUR SPIEL-ARENA in Düsseldorf to attend SportsInnovation 2024. The industry fair provided insights into future trends in the areas of sport, media, technology and stadium.

In his opening address, DFL CEO Steffen Merkel spoke about the great potential of artificial intelligence in sport, among other topics. Pointing to the importance of AI for society at large, he advocated a responsible approach to the technology, emphasising that the Bundesliga should be a role model in this respect. For the third time the DFL joined hands with venue operator and event specialist D.LIVE as well as sport business conference organiser Spielmacher to run the trade fair for future technologies in sport. The Innovation Games were the highlight of the event. The DFL, partners and some of the roughly 60 exhibitors demonstrated innovative camera technologies, remote production, mixed-reality applications, next-generation data collection and more, all live on the pitch. The overarching topic: opportunities offered by Generative AI.

AWS becomes DFL’s official Generative AI Provider
DFL and Amazon Web Services agree long-term expansion of their collaboration

At SportsInnovation, DFL Deutsche Fußball Liga and Amazon Web Services (AWS) extended and expanded their cooperation agreement which was first established in 2020. AWS will continue to be the official technology provider to the DFL for years to come. The parties agreed to augment their collaboration by including innovative uses of generative artificial intelligence as an additional focal area.

Outlook: Der Klassiker and “Bundesliga In-Match Analysis”
The DFL launches “Bundesliga In-Match Analysis”, the next evolutionary step in further enhancing statistics visualisations in live broadcasts and feeds to make them even more compelling. Developed in cooperation with AWS and computer graphics specialists Vizrt, the new application automatically generates video clips of relevant match scenes, including related graphics elements. The feature will be available for the first time on Saturday in the international feed and Tactical Feed of the Matchday 27 Der Klassiker between FC Bayern München and Borussia Dortmund.
